Our time in the Dolomites was filled with incredible hikes, stunning scenery, and unforgettable moments shared between Marc, Bernice, and me. The Dolomites are a hiker’s paradise, with trails for every level of adventurer, from easy walks around serene lakes to challenging climbs with breathtaking panoramic views. With Bernice comfortably riding in her backpack, we set out to explore some of the most beautiful trails this region has to offer. Here are the types of hikes we did during our stay—and what made each one special.

1. Easy Lakeside Walks: Lago di Braies

Our first hike was an easy, scenic walk around the stunning Lago di Braies, which is arguably one of the most famous lakes in the Dolomites. The path is relatively flat, making it perfect for a relaxed stroll while soaking in the beauty of the emerald-green lake surrounded by towering mountain peaks.

Marc and I loved this hike because it gave us a chance to really take in the beauty of the Dolomites without the effort of a steep climb. The loop around the lake was about 4 kilometers, and it allowed us to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Bernice, of course, enjoyed this one from her backpack, though she probably would have loved to splash in the lake if we’d let her! It was the perfect way to ease into our Dolomites adventure.

2. Moderate Hikes: Val Gardena to Seceda Ridge

For something a bit more challenging, we took on a moderate hike in Val Gardena that led us to the stunning Seceda Ridge. The trail started with a mix of gentle slopes and rocky paths before leading us higher up toward the jagged peaks that define the area. The best part? The view from the top was absolutely breathtaking.

Standing on Seceda Ridge, with its sharp peaks plunging dramatically into the valley below, felt like being on top of the world. Bernice enjoyed her ride up as always, and this was one of those hikes where the reward at the end was more than worth the effort. The view from the top made every step, every rocky incline, and even the switchbacks totally worth it. We spent some time at the top, just taking in the views before making our way back down.

3. Challenging Alpine Treks: Tre Cime di Lavaredo

One of the most iconic hikes in the Dolomites is the trek around the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Three Peaks), and it’s not for the faint of heart! This hike was one of the more challenging ones we did, with a good mix of steep climbs and rocky paths. The route is around 10 kilometers, with some sections that really push your legs, but the views are spectacular.

The trail took us right up to the base of these massive peaks, with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The weathered cliffs, alpine meadows, and wildflowers added to the beauty. Marc and I were feeling the burn in our legs by the end, but it was worth every step. Bernice, being carried in her trusty backpack, seemed to love the adventure, though she definitely enjoyed resting when we stopped at the refugios (mountain huts) along the way for a break.

4. Sunset Hikes: Alpe di Siusi

There’s something magical about a sunset hike, and one of our favorites in the Dolomites was at Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s largest high-altitude alpine meadow. The rolling green hills dotted with wildflowers, and the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites glowing in the golden light of the setting sun, made this a perfect evening hike.

We opted for a moderate loop trail that allowed us to wander through the vast meadows, taking in the tranquil beauty of the landscape as the sun dipped lower in the sky. It was a peaceful way to end the day, and the views were nothing short of mesmerizing. Even Bernice seemed to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, snoozing in her backpack as we walked.

5. Alpine Challenge: The Rosengarten Loop

For our final hike, we decided to take on a real alpine challenge—the Rosengarten Loop. This trail was a full-day trek, with steep inclines, rocky paths, and some technical sections that had us scrambling up boulders. The Rosengarten massif is one of the most beautiful parts of the Dolomites, and the views were well worth the effort.

The hike took us through alpine forests, past clear mountain streams, and eventually up to the high mountain ridges where we could see for miles. The sharp peaks of the Rosengarten range, bathed in sunlight, were a sight to behold. We had packed plenty of water and snacks, and Bernice, as always, was riding in style in her backpack.

While this was the most difficult hike we did, it was also one of the most rewarding. The sense of accomplishment when we finished was amazing, and the views from the top were some of the best we had seen on the entire trip.

Final Thoughts: Hiking as a Family

Hiking in the Dolomites was one of the best parts of our European road trip, and doing it with Marc and Bernice made it even more special. Each hike offered something different—whether it was the peaceful stroll around Lago di Braies, the challenging trek to Tre Cime, or the stunning sunset walk at Alpe di Siusi, these trails showcased the diverse beauty of the Dolomites.

Bernice was an absolute trooper, happily joining us for every hike from the comfort of her backpack. And Marc and I cherished every moment—whether we were scrambling up rocky slopes or pausing to take in the panoramic views. Hiking in the Dolomites is an experience we’ll never forget, and we can’t wait for our next adventure together!

Here’s to more trails, more views, and more unforgettable moments as a family!
