Snowboarding in Trysil, Norway: Sub-Zero Temperatures, Sweet Rides & Snuggly Nights in the Motorhome

Our winter road trip through Europe brought us all the way to Trysil, Norway, and let me tell you—it was like stepping into a snow globe. Trysil is Norway’s largest ski resort, and as we rolled in with our motorhome, the landscape felt straight out of a postcard. Towering pine trees dusted with snow, clean white slopes stretching for miles, and that icy stillness that wraps itself around you like a thick winter blanket.

But Trysil didn’t just greet us with beauty—it also hit us with a deep freeze. The temperature dropped to -20°C, the kind of cold that bites your nose the second you step outside. But surprisingly? We were warm. Really warm, actually.

Our Cozy Winter Base

I’d packed us two heaters for the trip: one oil and one electric. The electric heater quickly became the MVP. It quietly hummed away in the corner, keeping the motorhome toasty and comfortable even while the outside world was frozen solid. We spent our evenings wrapped in blankets, drinking hot tea and warming our hands on mugs while the windows frosted over. It was the kind of cozy that makes you want to stay in your pyjamas all day.

Down But Not Out

Unfortunately, right as we arrived, I came down with a cold. Not ideal when you're surrounded by pristine ski slopes and fresh powder just begging to be carved into. I stayed tucked up inside, dosed up on vitamin C, and tried to rest—but the real hero of the week was Marc.

He hit the slopes solo, snowboard strapped to his feet, carving through snow like a pro. But every time he came back, he made sure I had everything I needed. Hot drinks, warm food, a fluffed-up duvet. He even offered to skip a session to stay with me (I told him not to, of course). He looked after me so well, and even though I wasn’t out there with him, I still felt part of the adventure.

Trysil’s Magic

Trysil itself is something special. The runs are wide and smooth, perfect for both beginners and seasoned snowboarders. The views from the top are stunning—pine forests stretch endlessly in every direction, and when the sun breaks through, the snow glistens like a sea of diamonds.

Marc came back every day with stories of new runs, beautiful turns, and peaceful chairlift rides with the mountains as his backdrop. I lived vicariously through him that week, and even though I wasn’t physically on the slopes, the magic of Trysil still reached me—from our little window, watching him come back smiling and snow-dusted.

Simple Things, Big Memories

This trip reminded me that adventure doesn’t always look like action-packed days and big hikes. Sometimes it looks like steaming mugs in a tiny kitchen, the quiet hum of a heater on a freezing night, and the comfort of knowing you’re cared for—even when you're a bit under the weather.

So yes, it was -20°C. Yes, I had a cold. But we were warm, happy, and together—and that’s more than enough.
