After months of planning and anticipation, Marc and I finally embarked on our first road trip in our brand-new motorhome. The excitement was palpable as we left London, ready to explore the open road. Our first destination: Dijon, the heart of France’s Burgundy region. Little did we know that this trip would be filled with unexpected challenges and delightful surprises.

The thrill of driving our motorhome through the English countryside, and eventually onto the Eurotunnel, was unmatched. As we crossed the Channel and set our wheels on French soil, it felt like the adventure was truly beginning. The freedom that comes with having your home on wheels is exhilarating—no hotel bookings to worry about, and the ability to stop wherever and whenever we wanted.

However, our excitement was soon tempered by the realities of traveling in a motorhome. We quickly realized that our initial plans might not go as smoothly as we had hoped.

One of the first hurdles we encountered was the unreliable Wi-Fi. We had hoped to stay connected throughout the journey to navigate, check in with family, and even stream some entertainment in the evenings. But as we ventured deeper into rural France, the Wi-Fi signal began to drop—and at times, disappeared entirely.

Without reliable internet, finding campsites or even checking our route became a challenge. We had mapped out a few potential stops in advance, but as we approached Dijon, each one seemed either fully booked or completely unavailable. Frustration started to creep in as we drove from one location to another, only to be met with "No Vacancy" signs or closed gates.

Just as we were beginning to feel the strain of our situation, we stumbled upon a small, charming farm just outside Dijon. It wasn’t a campsite, but a picturesque parking space near a peaceful field. The farm had an old-world charm, with rolling hills, grazing cows, and a beautiful sunset painting the sky.

The farmer, a kind and welcoming gentleman, allowed us to park there for the night. It wasn’t the well-equipped campsite we had imagined, but it turned out to be even better. The tranquility of the surroundings was exactly what we needed after a long day of driving and searching. We enjoyed a quiet evening, sharing a bottle of local wine under the stars, surrounded by the sounds of nature.

Our first stop in Dijon taught us that sometimes, the best experiences are the ones you don’t plan for. The challenges we faced—spotty Wi-Fi, elusive campsites—pushed us out of our comfort zone and led us to a unique experience we’ll never forget.

As we continue our journey through France, Marc and I are learning to embrace the unexpected. Our road trip has just begun, and we’re excited to see where the road takes us next. Whether we’re parked by a bustling city or a quiet farm, this adventure is about more than just the destinations; it’s about the journey and the memories we create along the way.

Here’s to more unplanned stops, breathtaking views, and the joys of motorhome travel!
