From India to the Himalayas: Checking into Kathmandu

After the whirlwind of India’s Golden Triangle, Marc and I boarded a short flight from New Delhi to Kathmandu, trading the grand forts and Mughal palaces for the majestic gateway to the Himalayas. Even from the plane window, we could feel it: something ancient, sacred, and still.
Kathmandu welcomed us with open skies and a kind of quiet energy that settled deep in your chest. A city of chaos and calm, incense and honking horns, ancient stupas and bustling alleyways. But first, before exploring its depths, we checked into our sanctuary for the next few days—Baber Mahal Vilas – The Heritage Hotel.
Tucked away in a restored palace complex, Baber Mahal Vilas felt like stepping into another world. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted with warmth and grace—the kind of hospitality that’s rare and deeply genuine. The intricate Newari architecture, carved wooden doorways, and sun-dappled courtyards made us feel like we were staying somewhere rich in both history and heart.
Our room was stunning. Tall ceilings, traditional woodwork, and soft Nepali textiles—it felt regal yet cosy. Marc wasted no time soaking in the atmosphere (and the giant bath), while I just stood at the balcony for a moment, taking in the view of Kathmandu’s patchwork rooftops.
That first night, we didn’t rush to explore. We had a beautiful dinner on-site, sampling Nepali flavours with a modern twist, and simply breathed in the shift. From the dusty plains of Agra to the cool mountain air of Kathmandu, it felt like we had arrived somewhere sacred—somewhere slower.
This was going to be a different kind of adventure. One of spirit, simplicity, and discovery. But as always, the best part wasn’t the place—it was being here with Marc
