A Weekend in Marrakech: Magic, Monuments & Moroccan Charm

Sometimes, all it takes is a weekend to feel like you’ve stepped into another world—and that’s exactly what Marrakech gave us.

Marc and I decided to take a spontaneous escape to Morocco, and from the moment we landed, the city swept us up in its energy. Marrakech is colour, rhythm, history, and soul. It’s alive in every sense, and somehow manages to be both chaotic and calming at once.
Our days were filled with exploration, laughter, and those moments that stay with you long after the trip ends.
In the bustling Jemaa el-Fnaa square, we saw a man dancing with a rattlesnake—yes, an actual rattlesnake. The way he moved with it was part performance, part hypnotic trance. Crowds gathered, music played from unseen corners, and the scent of spices hung in the warm air.
I got my hand decorated in henna by a lovely local woman who smiled the entire time as she told me about her family and work. The design was intricate and delicate, like lace woven from the traditions of generations. Sitting still in the middle of the madness while she worked her magic felt like a little pause in time.

We wandered through the souks, winding alleys overflowing with textiles, lanterns, rugs, and every kind of handmade treasure you can imagine. Bargaining felt like part of the dance, and even when we didn’t buy anything, we came away with stories.
We visited ancient monuments and palaces, standing in awe of their architecture and wondering what life looked like here centuries ago. The Koutoubia Mosque, with its towering minaret, watched over us as we explored.
One of the highlights was our visit to the Yves Saint Laurent Museum and the Majorelle Garden—a slice of serenity in the middle of the city. The bold blues, lush plants, and peaceful energy made it one of my favourite spots. To think that a place so quiet exists just minutes from the city’s whirlwind is incredible.
Morocco gifted us a weekend of colour, culture, and connection. It reminded us that no matter how far you go, what really makes travel special is experiencing it with someone you love.
And sharing mint tea in the sunshine with Marc, as the sounds of the city drifted by… that’s a memory I’ll tuck in my heart forever.
